Why PRINCE2® 7 is worth it and what has changed

PRINCE2® is a project management method. PeopleCert published version 7 in 2023; training and certification have been available since 4 September 2023 (PeopleCert). It keeps the seven processes and brings these main changes:

• PeopleThe method has its own element on leadership, teamwork and communication.
• SustainabilitySustainability is part of project performance, alongside the familiar targets of time, cost and quality.
• Digital and data managementData and digital tools are part of the method, for example where data comes from and how it is protected.
• FlexibilityFewer rigid rules and more adaptation to the project (tailoring), compatible with agile approaches.

Your roadmap to the PRINCE2® 7 Foundation certificate

A clear plan helps you avoid unnecessary costs and make use of funding. Here is how to go about it:

1. Choose your format: full-time course, live online or self-study with an app, depending on your schedule.
2. Keep an eye on costs: course, exam fee, learning material and a possible re-sit. Providers set their own prices, so compare several offers.
3. Check funding options: for example a government training voucher (Bildungsgutschein), tax deductibility or a contribution from your employer.
4. Settle the financing: before the course starts, clarify which costs you pay yourself and whether instalments are possible.

Full-time or part-time? Choose your learning format

Not everyone learns the same way. Durations depend on the provider and on your prior knowledge; the values are guidelines, not an exam requirement.

Tip: if you work full-time or have a family, learning with an app lets you pause and resume whenever you like, repeat what you are unsure about and stay free of fixed schedules.

Funding options for your PRINCE2® certification

Whether you receive funding, and how much, depends on your individual case. These are the options to look into (the German funding rules below apply to training in Germany):

• Training voucher (Bildungsgutschein)The German employment agency can fund continuing education with approved providers (AZAV) if it is needed to end or avoid unemployment. Advice before you start is required. The agency decides case by case.
• Tax deductibilityIf the costs are work-related, you can usually claim them as income-related expenses (§ 9 EStG), for example course fees, exam costs and learning materials. A tax adviser can clarify your case.
• EmployerAsk about training budgets or a contribution to the costs. In project-oriented companies, PRINCE2® can be in demand.

Important: you usually have to apply for funding before the course starts. Get in touch with the employment agency and your employer early.

What you need to know about the PRINCE2® exams

PRINCE2® is not a legal requirement, but some companies ask for it for project roles. The certification has two levels. The details come from PeopleCert (see the status below):

For the Foundation exam, 60 % of 60 questions means 36 correct answers. The Practitioner exam has prerequisites; PeopleCert lists the details. The exams cover principles, practices, processes, roles and responsibilities, and tailoring.

You can prepare with the official learning material of the exam body, with a course and with your own practice questions. Original exam questions are not public, so practise with questions that follow the style of the exam.

Digital solution: the PRINCE2® Foundation learning app
